Box Card Tutorial

Hello again,

I made my first ever box card last month for Mothers Day, the lovely Christina from Memories Crafter asked if I would make a tutorial for making the box card, I finally got an idea in my head as what to do with the card I make so here goes, but remember this one is very new to me and I’m not an expert!

This card will fold flat for postage and fit comfortably in a 13.4cm x 18.4cm envelope (or a 5x7”)

my apologies for the photos, the winter sun or lack decent sunlight of made the flash go off for most of the photos

I have used a 12” piece of cardstock to make this card:

1. Measure and cut cardstock to 17cm by 29cm (on reverse side)

    2. Mark your cardstock at 6,12,18 and 24cm(for the sides) 26cm (tab) 27.5cm and 29cm will create the struts (all marks done on reverse of cardstock, but I doubt I need to remind anyone that)

   3. Measure and mark card stock at 9cm from two opposite corners (short side)

    5. Cut along the 26cm mark, saving and cutting the two narrow strips
CUT all the vertical lines to the 9cm mark using your preferred tool (I use Stanley Knife and steel ruler)

   6. SCORE lines all remaining lines at 9cm across three sections (12, 18cm and 24cm marks) the first section becomes the upright/back of the card, for the struts measure 1.5cm from each end and score across creating 'U' shape pieces

   7. Erase any pencil lines and fold the box into shape, folding down the flaps and overlapping the tab.

I find it easier to work with whilst it can still lay flat against my matt gluing/adhering together towards the end.

Side/flap panels
Using your chosen paper or card measure and cut layers
For the layers I have allowed 3mm border between layers (all the way around)
Cut, layer and adhere each piece to the box card

Sides 1st layer 8.4cm x 5.4cm cut THREE
               2nd layer (pattern) 7.8cm x 4.8cm cut THREE
Back  1st layer 16.4cm x 5.4cm cut ONE
               2nd layer (pattern) 15.8cm x 4.8cm cut ONE

(okay you don’t really have to decorate the panel at the back of the box card, you may prefer a plain writing surface here, but I’m fussy and like the back to match all the sides and choose to write on the underside of the flaps)

Inside Flaps 1st layer 7.4cm x 5.4cm cut THREE
               2nd layer (pattern) 6.8cm x 4.8cm cut THREE

Now form into box and adhere closed using the tab, the tab can be left full length or cut off where the flaps start, adhered to the inside or outside which ever you prefer…

The two little struts can now be inserted into the top of the box, gluing the tabs to the sides of the box, with the edge flush with the top of the box.

Decorate your card as desired, attach narrow strips of acetate to the struts inside the box to create the illusion that objects are floating or flying in the air.

I have chosen to make my card into a Christmas card which you can see below...

Here's my finished card:-
